Ramsar sites in India declared after 2023

In this article, we would like to provide a detailed list of Ramsar sites in India. Moreover, we would also be given the total number of Ramsar sites declared after 2020. As we know, Ramsar is a city in Iran, and in 1971, a convention was held to protect wetland sites around the world. India adopted the Ramsar Convention in 1982, and since then, the GoI has declared numerous wetland sites. Till 2020, India had only 42 wetlands, but after 2020, there has been a rapid increase in this number.

Udhwa Lake

It was declared a Ramsar site on 2nd February 2025. It is located in the Sahibganj district of Jharkhand. It is surrounded by Rajmahal Hills and is also connected by a channel to the Ganga River. It is the only Ramsar site in the state of Jharkhand.

  • Khecheopalri Wetland: This wetland is located in the state of Sikkim and was declared a Ramsar site on 2nd February 2025. It is the only Ramsar site in the state of Sikkim.
  • Therthangal Bird Sanctuary: There were four wetland sites declared as Ramsar sites in India on 2nd February 2025, and one of them is Therthangal Bird Sanctuary, located in Ramanathapuram district in the state of Tamil Nadu.
  • Sakkarakottai Bird Sanctuary: Tamil Nadu holds first rank in terms of the total number of Ramsar sites in India. On 2nd February, 2025, the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change declared it as a Ramsar site; with this, Tamil Nadu has a total of 20 Ramsar sites.
  • Tawa Reservoir: The Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change declared a total of 3 wetland sites as Ramsar sites in 2024, and one of them is Tawa Reservoir, located in Naramadapuram district of Madhya Pradesh.
  • Nanjarayan Bird Sanctuary: It is located in the state of Tamil Nadu and was declared a Ramsar site in 2024. As mentioned above, Tamil Nadu holds the number one rank in terms of the total number of Ramsar sites in India, followed by Uttar Pradesh.
  • Kaluveli Bird Sanctuary: It was the third wetland site declared as a Ramsar site by the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change in 2024. It is located in the Villupuram district of Tamil Nadu.
  • Nagi Bird Sanctuary: It is located in the Jamui district in the state of Bihar and was declared a Ramsar site in 2023. It is one of the three Ramsar sites located in Bihar.
  • Nakti Bird Sanctuary: It was the second bird sanctuary to be declared a Ramsar site in 2023 from Bihar; with this, Bihar has a total of 3 Ramsar sites.

Longwood Shola Reserve Forest

Shola is a Tamil word that means Thicket. Shola forests are high-altitude stunted forests. In 2023, the Total Seven Wetland site was declared as a Ramsar site; two were from Bihar, two were from Tamil Nadu, and three were from Karnataka. It was one of two wetland sites declared as a Ramsar site by the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change in 2023.

Karaivetti Bird Sanctuary

It is located in the Ariyalur district of Tamil Nadu and was declared a Ramsar site in 2023.

  • Aghanashini Estuary: It is a biologically rich area and is located at the confluence of the Aghanashini River and the Arabian Sea. It is located in the state of Karnataka and was declared a Ramsar Site in 2023.
  • Magadi Kere Conservative Reserve: It is a human-made wetland, initially constructed for irrigation purposes, but over time it has become alkaline and unfit for irrigation, providing natural habitat conditions for more than 165 bird species. It is located in Karnataka and was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 2023.
  • Ankasamudra Bird Conservation Reserve: It is also a human-made wetland declared as a Ramsar site in 2023. It is located in the Vijayanagara District of Karnataka.
