Geographical Indications (GI tag) 2023

In this Article, We would like to study about GI Tag. GI tag i.e Geographical Indications, is a special label that identify a product to its region of origin. It link quality and characteristic of a GI tag products to its region of origin. For example, Alphonso mango is a species of mango found in Maharashtra. When a product gets GI tag, then along with that product, the place where that product is originally manufactured/ Produced/Grown becomes famous That’s why sometimes disputes arise between two states regarding this.

GI Tag Products in India in India

GI tag is being awarded by the Government of India since 2004 and so far 635 Indian products have been given GI tag till 31st March,2024. In 2023, 33 Indian products were awarded GI tag, out of which 11 products of Tamil Nadu, 10 products of Uttar Pradesh, 8 products of Jammu and Kashmir, and 1-1 products of Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Bihar and Ladakh were awarded GI tag.

1). GI tag was given to 3 agricultural products, 3 handicrafts, 3 food stuff, and 1-1 product of natural goods and textiles from Tamil Nadu.

Important Geographical Indications Product

1. Darjeeling tea

For the first time in 2004, a product was given GI Tag. Darjeeling is one of the 23 districts of West Bengal where the tea produced was given GI Tag in 2004. The first GI tag for any product in India was given to Darjeeling tea in 2004.

2. Mithila Makhana

Mithila is a Cultural area spread in Bihar and Nepal. In 2022, Mithila Makhana was awarded GI Tag by the Government of India. It is famous for its delicious taste, health benefit and for its cultural identity across India.

3. Ishad Mango

This is a variety of mango that’s grown(origin) in Ankola district of Karnataka. Due to the excess of hybrid variety mangoes, its existence is now in danger. In 2023, it has been awarded GI Tag by the Government of India.
