In this Article, We would like to study about Tennis Games. Do you know when and where the tennis game was invented? Well, there is no specific answer to this, but still, I try to tell it in short. It is known from Wikipedia and other various sources that the game of tennis started in the 12th century but then people used hands instead of rackets and it was known as the game of the palm.
- In the 16th century, people started using rackets and since then it came to be called as tennis. The game is believed to have originated in England and France.
- The history of tennis is very complex and long, so without getting into its so many historical aspects, let us try to know about the famous four major tournaments in tennis.
- As we know that there are four major events of tennis, together they are known as Grand Slam. The names of the four events are as follows
- 1-Wimbledon
- 2-U.S Open
- 3-French Open
The starting year of these four events is given in the table below.
Event | Starting year |
1-Wimbledon | 1877 |
2-U.S Open | 1881 |
3-French Open | 1891 |

Look, if you are a cricket lover, then you would know that the ground on which cricket is played has a pitch. Similarly, the place where tennis is played is called the court. The shape of the cricket pitch is rectangular and its length and width are fixed and it is determined by the ICC. Similarly, the shape of the tennis court is also rectangular and its dimensions are determined by the International Tennis Federation. Like every game, this game is also played by two sides. Each side has one or two players. If there is one player, it is called singles and if there are two players, it is called doubles.
In doubles, if one player is male and one is female, then it is called double mixed. The dimensions of the court are (23.77m X 8.23m) for singles and (23.77m X 10.97m) for doubles. You can observe that the width of the court is more in double while the length is the same in both formats. Apart from this, there are other different types of dimensions, which we will read in a separate article.
Important Terminology in Tennis
Double fault
The game starts with the toss. The objective of the toss is who will serve first and from which side. If the player fails in the first service, then he is given a second chance and if he fails in the second service, then it is called a “double fault” and one point is granted to the opponent.
It is also necessary to understand the point system in tennis. If a player is given 1 point, it means that his score becomes 15, if 2 points are given, then his score becomes 30, and after getting 3 points, the score is 40, 4 points are needed to win.
Point | score |
0 point | Love |
1 point | 15 |
2 point | 30 |
3 point | 40 |
4 point | Win “game” |
Deuce
If anyhow the score of both sides becomes 40-40 in the game, then it is called Deuce. Any player who scores two consecutive points after Deus is declared the winner.
Advantage
Any player who earns a point after the deuce condition is called Advantage. If a player failed to score two consecutive points and the opponent scores a point then the game again comes to a deuce condition.
Love
Tennis is a game of professional people, here words like zero or nil are not used, instead the term love is used, for example if the the score of a game is 40-0, then it is called “40 love”.
Volley
When a player hits the tennis ball without it falling on the ground, it is called a volley.
Grand Slam
When a player wins all four major tennis events in one year, this achievement is called Grand Slam.
Golden Grand Slam
Along with the four major events of tennis, if the player also wins the Olympic gold medal in the same year, then it is called the Golden Grand Slam.
