The major river that flows through Assam are the Brahmaputra, Manas, and Barak River

Barak River is a major river of North- East India. It’s a Transboundary river that originated from Liyai Kullen Village in Manipur and flows through the states of Manipur, Mizoram, Assam, and Nagaland and further, it enters into Bangladesh. In Bangladesh, Barak river split into two branches, the surma River and The Kushiyara River, further Kushiyara river was divided into two branches and these two branches of the Kushiyara river join the Surma river later. When the Surma river joins the Brahmaputra River, the combined flow is called as Meghna River and further the Meghna river joins the Padma river, eventually, the Padma river empties into the Bay of Bengal.

Manas is also a transboundary river, a major tributary of the Brahmaputra river, and it is also the largest river system in Bhutan. Manas river is named after a Hindu goddess of snakes i.e Manasa.Goddess Manasa is famous in various states of India such as Assam, West Bengal, and Bihar. In mythology, it’s believed that she is the destroyer of poison. Manas river joins the Brahmaputra river near Jogighopa, a small town in the Bongaigaon district of Assam.

Brahmaputra river also known as tsangpo river in China and Dibang River in Arunachal Pradesh, do not confuse with the Dibang river, Dibang river is a Major tributary of the Dihang river. The famous Majuli Island is formed by this River. Majuli Island is the world’s largest river island and also India’s first River Island recognized as a district in India. 

One more river which is important for Assam and West Bengal is the sankosh river the tributary of the Brahmaputra which forms the boundary between these two states.

The famous city Guwahati which is called Gateway to North East is located on the bank of the Brahmaputra river.

Dibrugarh, a famous city in Assam is also located on the bank of the Brahmaputra river.

Brahmaputra river finally joins the Padma river “a major distributary of River Ganga” in Bangladesh and the combined flow of Brahmaputra and Padma is called the Meghna river which finally empties into the Bay of Bengal.

Bihu Festival, Kherai Festival, Rocker festival, Chomangkan festival, Sangken festival, Ali Aye clinging, and Me-Dam- Me-Phi festival are the famous festival of Assam.

Famous Festivals in Assam

The most famous festival of Assam is Bihu which is related to the cultivation of crops.It is of three types and celebrated in three different seasons.

  • The first type is Rangoli Bihu which is celebrated in March and April.
  • The second type is Kongali Bihu which is celebrated in October
  • And last but not least is Bhogali Bihu which is celebrated in January.
  • The most important part of the Bihu Festival is the Bihu dance, which is performed by both male and female artists. Bihu is one of the most famous Folk dances of Assam.

Kherai festival is celebrated by Bodo Tribes. As we know that Bodo is one of the 22 official languages recognized by the constitution through the 92nd amendment of the constitution in 2003…Bodo language is spoken by the Bodo community which is one of the largest tribes in Assam. Kherai festival is celebrated once or twice a year for the good harvest of crops as the major population of the Bodo community depends on Agriculture.

Kherai festival is performed by the male priest and female priest. In the Bodo language, a male priest is called Douri and the female priest is called Doudini and she is the chief dancer and performed Kherai dance with devotion.

The faith closely related to the Bodo people is Bathouism. It is the folk religion of the Bodo tribe. The Chief deity of the Bodo people is Bathoubwraj. Bodo people believed that their chief deity is present everywhere, knows everything, and has the skill to do everything. Bathoubwraj created Bathou. Bathou means five principals. These five principal are air, fire, earth, water, and ether.

One more famous deity of Bodo Tribes is Mainao ” Daughter of Bathoubwraj” . She is considered to be protector of rice field . 

Rongker festival is celebrated by Karbis people. Karbis is a tribe in Assam . The people of Karbi community live near Kaziranga National park area.

Karbis People celebrated there new year on 5th February each year and generally Rongker festival is also observed on this date but it may vary from village to village.

Chomangkan festival is celebrated by Karbi tribes in Assam. this festival is the festival of death. People pray for deliverance of soul from sin and for peace of soul who already died .

Sanken festival is a festival of new year celebrated by Theravada budhhism communities. After the end of the festival, first day of new year started. It is generally celebrated from 14th April to 16 April. Theravada Buddhist community is a school of elder monks. Theravada Buddhist are those who accepted budhha teaching preserved only in Pali language and collection of those scriptures which preserved in Pali language is known as Pali Canon. they don’t accept budhha teaching available in Scriptures of other languages .
